Q: I am moving from the east coast to the west - what can I expect in terms of appropriate work wear? I am in dark suits every day now and am told that I need to be more casual on the west coast and not sure what the means for work. Help! (MR, via email)
A: Not knowing what business you're in makes the answer a little daunting, but here goes: Whether east or west, or north or south, one cannot look too business-like; dark suits in business send the right message all the time. If one thinks making a living is a serious pursuit, one needs to look serious too. It would be fair to say the corporate culture of your new company will make itself clear in fairly short order. Don't be afraid to ask colleagues and supervisors what they think is appropriate to wear to the office, and take visual cues from those at who work at your level. One last piece of advice: don't confuse a more casual work look with a more casual work attitude, as such is not the case. And lastly, welcome to the west coast. |
