Q: I've recently gotten some medium-grey jeans. However, I have little idea as to what goes well with it. What kind of a shirt or top should I wear? What colour should they be? And what colored coat would go well with that ensemble? (CX, via email)

A: Congratulations on your purchase of the grey jeans. Grey is a very current colour, and will be a cool choice for some time to come, I think.

As to what to wear with it on top, well, almost everything these days comes back to denim. The mere choice of denim, any denim, make the tops much easier to choose, as denim is seen as a neutral, almost regardless of the denim's colour itself.

For casual and weekend wear, these days a check shirt is very much a la mode. Arnold Zimberg, long time sportswear designer from Los Angeles, is very hip. One advantage to checks is they're often multi-coloured, allowing the coordination of the denim colour and one or more of the colours in the shirt.

Anything with a white ground will look good too, whether it's graphics or stripes, and in almost any colour. Lacoste polo shirts would be great, and if you were to top that off with a zippered sweat top, that would give you a cool Streetwear look without looking grungy.

As for coats, black is presently the number one seller in nylon or wool, so that would work for you.
Leathers in black or rust would show off your sense of style very well indeed.
