What’s in a Name?

Change is in the wind

The name British Importers has stood for service, quality and selection for generations of Victorians. Further, the name carries a reputation of which B.I. is justifiably proud.

This name, while carrying our reputation forward, has of late, held British Importers back. That is to say, the name no longer reflects the evolution the store has gone through with the passage of years.

And what does that evolution look like in retrospect?

To begin with, British Importers is no longer a Government Street merchant, but a destination store. A few things were given up to do this, but the plusses are many, starting with parking, which is no longer a problem for our customers. The store itself is much larger; premises have expanded to 12,500 square feet allowing for a larger, more varied selection of inventory. Giving customers more choice, more selection, is an important part of the evolution.

The addition of womenswear, started in a small corner at the front of the new store, now moved into its own space and having expanded twice in three and a half years is almost an evolution in itself.

And lastly, there is this simple truth: British Importers is no longer British. This brings us to the last point of the B.I. evolution. For those who haven’t shopped at B.I. because they thought of teapots and marmalade, we’ve got news for you: British Importers is going to change it’s name.

Before we spill the beans, let’s consider what kind of names retailers go by. Most commonly, it’s someone’s name. For instance, we’ve all heard of Holt Renfrew or Harry Rosen. Many will remember Eaton’s and Woodward’s. How about Neiman Marcus or Nordstrom? The same name tradition holds true if you’re a car dealer, a funeral director, a lawyer or a handyman. And so it will be at B.I.

Be comforted though, as all else will remain the same; only the name will be changed.

As of this August, as an introduction to the Fall/Winter season of 2009, B.I. will henceforth be known as…
